The plaza in front of Galerija is one of the few places in Belgrade where a large number of stalls can go up and there is still room to walk. That is why food events are held here regularly — weekends built around food and wine, fairs of local producers, and street food festivals.
What is poured and what is eaten
Events like this are mostly the domain of small and mid-sized Serbian wineries. It is a chance to taste wines from several regions in one afternoon without travelling anywhere — Fruška gora and its whites, Šumadija, which has been making serious reds in recent years, the Negotin valley and the Vršac area. The wine comes with local cheeses, cured meats, honey, ratluk and cakes.
Restaurants from the complex and from Beton hala usually set up smaller stands with reduced portions, so you can try several kitchens in a day. It is also a good way to work out where you want to come back for a proper dinner.
How it usually works
Entry to these events is normally free and you pay only for what you eat and drink. At most wine events you buy a glass at the entrance and then pay per pour, or you buy tokens. Bring some cash — most stands take cards, but with smaller producers it can fail.
When to come
Early afternoon is the most pleasant. There is space at the tables, producers have time to tell you about what they are pouring, and the sun is no longer beating down. After six the plaza fills up properly, the queue for food gets longer, and conversation with the winemaker comes down to handing over a glass.
If you are coming with children, arrive earlier and count on Savski park being right next door, so you can take a break when they have had enough.
Distance from our apartments
The plaza in front of Galerija is a four to five minute walk from the buildings where our apartments are. Which means you can taste the wine and walk home, with no thought given to driving — which is, honestly, the single biggest advantage of this location.
